Above is a build that focuses primarily on maximizing TPS potential. This build can work for raids, heroics and regular dungeons with the inclusion of Improved Thunder Clap. If you cannot reach the defence cap without Anticipation, you can take 3 points from Tactical Mastery and 2 points from Improved Bloodrage.
You can grab Improved Defensive Stance if you wish for a more defensive build, but it should be noted that it’s not very necessary at this point in the game. Shield Wall is an ability we use in anticipation of heavy incoming damage and is not expected to last very long, so, Improved Shield Wall is not necessary, either.

in wow classic defense is all but ignored and was written off as not a big deal, cant we assume the same for tbc or has something changed i am not aware of?
In Vanilla/Classic, the bosses were designed in a way that you didn’t need to be defence-capped. This was made evident from players being unable to reach 440 defence prior to entering raids. Even in full Tier 1, it’s still VERY challenging to reach the cap. The ease of reaching the cap begins in Tier 2 content.
In The Burning Crusade, the bosses were designed knowing that players had access to various pieces of gear that brought them to the defence cap, crush cap, etc. prior to entering Karazhan.
Another thing to note is that Classic didn’t have heroics. We’re also being treated to the pre-nerf version of each raid boss, which means they’re hitting harder and taking longer to kill, causing players to be more susceptible to critical strikes as fights drag on.
i had my hit cap and was at 440 defense in classic wow what not hard or challenging to get it
Would you be able to share your gear set?
sure share what my pre-raid and what i have on now for raid item

that was all my pre-raid guild ran me to get Quel’Serrar
310 def from skills def from all gear is 132 then def from tree +10
opps sorry the +10 is in with the 310
Here’s what I got when I used that gear:
– Defence: 414
– Hit Chance: 2.00%
I went out and enchanted every possible piece with +defence, and was left with 437 defence (Assuming you’d use Presence of Might on those items)
Unfortunately, the Defence cap is 440, and the Hit Cap is 9%
that was pre-raid the sword also give 20 def
Unfortunately, tanks cannot take into account chance-on-hit effects when factoring their defence skill or uncrushability.
In TBC Classic, Quel’Serrar has a chance on hit to increase your defence rating by 20 (This is equal to roughly 8.44)
In Classic WoW, Quel’Serrar has a chance on hit to increase your defence skill by 13.
I’d be curious to see your raiding set that allows 440 defence while allowing 9% Hit Rating.
why you say 9% as a human with sword skill maxed i only need 6%
For a regular tank with 300 skill you want 9% to max out. If you have 305 skill you only need 6%
Why did I say 9%? Because you never stated you were a Human. Even still, your numbers don’t add up.
You don’t NEED to be hit capped as a tank, typically you run around 3-5% hit. i have had a issue with that and my load out/spec right now is

on that planner wrist enchat is wrong in game it’s +5
not trying to act like a dick but this has been main for years and i have been playing warrior tank Vanilla-to shadow-lands i’m sorry but i disagae with 80% of guide’s and i voice how i feel about it i still have a folder with me spec/gear all writing down to this day when they changed the talent points in cata was my roll for the guild i was in to keep track of it all for all are raiders and when i say hit cap to me that is around the 3-5% hit. now this classic with fury/prot yes i would 100% say drop some def to hit 9% but back in the day you made ran into 1 to 3 fury/prots
on preraid i get 441 def and 2.20% hit but pre-raid doing dung/mc was not a big issue for me

The entire point of this conversation was that you claimed to be able to hit both defence and hit cap with your gear and so I asked you to share your gearset proving that claim. Neither claim was proven with the first set of gear you linked to me since Presence of Might wouldn’t be included since that’s from a ZG quest, and you said it was Pre-Raid.
I agree that we didn’t see nearly as many Fury-Prot tanks back in 2004. 99% of Warrior tanks ran deep-Prot since that was what was outlined as the tanking spec, and we followed suit. Players were very different in 2004, waiting for 3 Sunders before attacking even trash. Back then we didn’t have to worry about our TPS, in fact, 90% of the time, we had excess rage because we didn’t follow a rotation.
Unfortunately, the “caps” are not subjective. If you are not at 6/9%, you’re not hit capped.
Your “Pre-Raid” gearset also isn’t… “Pre-Raid…” You will have done Onyxia’s Lair for both your sword and trinket. You’ll also have done Zul’Gurub, as well. And if we’re looking at it objectively, you wouldn’t be at the defence cap without those ZG enchants.
As far as you linking your Tier 2 set (Favorite visual, by the way) I stated in the comments above that Tier 2 was when we’d find it much easier to reach the defence cap, so I’m not really sure why you linked it.
Good on you for sticking with tanking for nearly 17 years. I myself have, as well. (Switching between Paladin and Warrior – depending on the needs of the my guild(s) at the time)
Never think that sharing your opinion makes you a jerk. It’s what makes the world go round. Hearing things from different perspectives is what we all need to do sometimes.
“We’re also being treated to the pre-nerf version of each raid boss,”
No we’re not, it’s the same wattered down scenario as with Vanilla classic
2.4.3 is what we got sadly
We are, in fact, getting pre-nerfed bosses.
Defense is VERY important in TBC, even in 5mans bosses will wreck you if you’re not defense capped. People only skipped out on defense because very few bosses hit hard in vanilla. In TBC, almost every boss hits hard and a crit can chunk you for 60-70% of your health. Plus, there’s a lot more +def gear in TBC so it’s much easier to be capped.
im Lf for dungen talents sence what we be doing @ start ! i think putting last 10 points in furrs and then respecting to something more endgame.

for me this seems the best way to talent any comment ?
Your first build (this link) does go to level 70, so I assume you mean level 70 dungeon talents, so if not, we’ll get to that, don’t worry.
As a Warrior tank, we have to be as versatile as we possibly be. This build shows you neglected Deflection in favour of Improved Heroic Strike, which for dungeons means a lower chance of survival, which is emphasized even more with only having the one healer, rather than a minimum of 2 in Karazhan. Unbridled Wrath requires you to actually hit the mob/boss in order to give you that chance to generate an additional rage point, which means you won’t benefit from it as much as you would if you were hit capped. However, Berserker Rage allows you to generate additional rage when you take damage, which is pretty much a guarantee to happen. By neglecting Anticipation, not only are you lowering your defence skill and causing you to have to obtain a higher amount from gear/enchants/gems, you’re also sacrificing 3.20% total avoidance. Improved Revenge, while on paper does sound great, it actually can hinder your success. For example, if you happened to start a pull, and get a Revenge proc, and then have to move the pull back because of pats or what have you, that stunned mob will likely still bring the pats. Improved Taunt is massively important, especially since DPS are hitting harder than they’ve ever hit, and they’re still not waiting for any tank to generate sufficient threat before starting to attack.
Your second build (this link) sees a couple of changes…
Improved Heroic Strike IS recommended as long as you are main-tanking your raids, since it’s mainly a rage-dump ability, and if you’re not main-tanking, then you won’t have the rage to spare. Even worse than before, you have zero points in Deflection, which is going to really hurt your chances of survival.
Unbridled Wrath is still the same reasoning as before. Piercing Howl is not beneficial enough for tanks to grab, since whenever we are tanking a pull, we’re not wanting to slow their speed, especially if we have to move them for whatever reason. Unfortunately, it’s a fairly wasted talent point. If you really wanted to control mobs running away in fear, you could have a Paladin judge Seal of Justice on them, a Mage could Frost Nova, etc.
And again, Improved Taunt is pretty well a necessity.
I OT in kara last night with a MT who had worse gear, but I couldnt for the life of me pull threat.

This is what i ment

One very important thing to remember about playing a Warrior is that when it comes to tanking, there are plenty of moving parts to consider.
I have some questions about your experience:
Looking over his talent build…
Improved Charge doesn’t make any sense to pick up since he doesn’t have Tactical Mastery, limiting his rage reserve between stances to 10 while Improved Charge causes Charge to generate 21 rage now. I’m not sure if he intends to stay in Battle Stance after charging in, but if not, Improved Charge is essentially pointless
Anger Management may seem ideal since it’s free rage, right? However, if you look at it objectively, it’s actually kind of useless. Sitting at 1 rage per 3 seconds while in combat means that if we wanted to use it for Heroic Strike, we’d have to wait 36 seconds (Heroic Strike coming in at 12 Rage)
a. Improved Bloodrage generates 16 immediate rage and 10 rage over 10 seconds. So, we will generate 26 rage per minute AND threat, as well
b. Anger Management generates 20 rage per minute, with little to no threat
Deep Wounds would generally appear to be beneficial. However, without going fully into Cruelty, you will lose out on some potential procs. Also, this damage is OVER 12 seconds – so, if we looked at King’s Defender’s average damage of 140, we’d go 140 x 0.60 = 84 damage over 12 seconds
a. Deep Wounds is, in fact, worse than just using Rend
The only real thing I’d mention about the Protection tree is that Improved Taunt goes a LONG way – 2/2 allows you to almost have two Taunts for every one Righteous Defense (Improved Defensive Stance isn’t mandatory, but it is incredibly beneficial on caster-mob fights)
First of all, wow, never thought I would receive such an in depth answer, thank you! Also, trying his spec out I do in fact find myself losing everything when changing stance, as I do have macro to charge into defensive stance. So I’m keen into changing to a new spec again. I understand that this is a far fetched request, would you mind helping me finding the right spec for me( based on gear etc) I constantly feel rage starved and struggle to keep aggro. Granted most people just nuke the shit out of everything outside of raids. I in general had better gear, but during the fights where i was tanking he quickly gained threat( not snatching aggro but just climbing) comparing to when I tried to keep second on threat after dealing with my main targets I just couldn’t reach. Email/discord/ anything if you have time.
Sure, you can add me on Discord – Kurathis#1765
Hi, I just started picking up warrior and wondered if you had an idea for a decent Fury build that went into prot to allow normal dungeon tanking/group content while leveling. Could not find a reliable resource personally.
Hey James,
Until level 60, it doesn’t really matter what build you go with since we have most of the same abilities (With the exception of Shield Slam and Concussion Blow – I’m neglecting Last Stand as it is a survivability tool which you may or may not see much use from anyway on your way to 60):
In my opinion, there’s no real optimal Fury-Prot build since you’re sacrificing substantial survivability, mitigation, and control. This would be my ideal build for Fury-Prot beginning at level 60.
The key thing to remember is that in Classic, many of us opted for a Fury-Prot build to improve our TPS to match that of our DPS’ because our Protection tree severely lacked in the TPS department. The damage we gained far-outweighed the increased we would take. In TBC, however, bosses generally hit too hard for this type of build to be beneficial.
Thanks, yeah I should have said I was lvl 65. I just wanted a bit more survivability while being able to dish out damage to help guildies through some dungeons, ive seen so many prot warriors have issues so worrid about going deep prot
what if you take the points out of focused rage and put them into deep wounds
